Example Grants

Below is a selection of grants we have been able to make due to the wonderful help of our donors.

Callum DOB 24.11.02

Callum is 10 years old and is registered blind, has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and is awaiting a gastrostomy. Callum is unable to walk or sit unaided so is constantly in his chair. He is unable to play outside as he has a tendency to be sick in the sun, so his family requested funding for a ‘summerhouse.’ This would allow him to be outside and play with his siblings but be protected from the sun at the same time. Callum’s social worker believes this would benefit him greatly enabling him to interact with his siblings in a normal living environment. We were happy to be able to help provide Callum with the Summerhouse.

Tyler DOB 24.02.97

Tyler has a diagnosis of Di George Syndrome and severe learning disabilities. He was born with holes in his heart and has issues with narrowing and furring of the valves. He has had 3 major heart surgeries and is likely to have more in the future. Tyler often gets frustrated when attempting to express himself. He currently uses an iPad in school and the apps that are available allow Tyler to experience a number of learning and communication opportunities from which he benefits greatly. Unfortunately his mother is a single parent and has her own health issues, she struggles to provide constant supervision for Tyler and has no expendable income to provide this vital piece of equipment herself. We received a request from Tyler’s social worker requesting funding for an iPad which she agrees would benefit him considerably. We were happy to provide Tyler with an iPad.

Sohail DOB 07.12.99

Sohail has a diagnosis of dyspraxia (a chronic neurological disorder) and difficulties with movement. He regularly sees a physiotherapist, podiatrist and occupational therapist for his needs and undergoes an exercise regime to promote healthy muscles. It has also been suggested that Sohail may have autism but this has not been formally diagnosed. He is struggling academically at school and despite his mother highlighting this with his teachers she has little help. Following a request we were happy to provide Sohail with a computer for to help him academically.

Kyle DOB 11.11.09

Kyle has a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy Spastic Diplegia (a chronic neuromuscular condition). He is unable to walk unaided and has weakness in the trunk of his body. We were happy to be able to provide funding for a treadmill, as after surgery he will need 2 years of intensive physiotherapy.

Charlie DOB 31.05.98

Charlie 1

Charlie is one of twin boys who were born prematurely at 25 weeks. As a result both boys have substantial disabilities. Charlie suffered a severe stroke as a result of respiratory distress. This has left him with Hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain), left side hemiplegia (paralysis of one side) and a splint to strengthen his left leg. He also has severe visual impairment, cerebral palsy and seizures. Charlie’s hemiplegia means he is non-ambulant and non-weight bearing and relies 100% on his wheelchair for mobility needs. We were happy to provide funding towards the cost of a mobility vehicle for the family.

Iwan DOB 22.11.96

Iwan has a diagnosis of West Syndrome, resulting in severe epilepsy and profound multiple disabilities. He is totally dependent on others for all activities of daily living and needs constant supervision to ensure he is safe. He uses a wheelchair and is totally dependent on it and a responsible adult to get around. He spends a lot of his day in his chair and due to his disability and resulting medical needs, often presents himself as a very frustrated young man. Both his parents and social worker feel he would greatly benefit at home from the use of specialist postural chair called a P Pod. Due to his size, he also requires a mobile base in order that his parents can move him around the home to ensure he is always included as part of the family. We were happy to provide funding for these items.

Part of his treatment has been for him to have an operation to have an Intracranial Pressure Monitoring Probe fitted into his skull to measure the pressure of fluid around his brain. His Consultant Neurosurgeon was concerned with the results and has referred him to a specialist team at a hospital 140 miles from his home. Colchester Hospital

After discussions with Colchester Hospital we have agreed to help with the purchase of an Intensive Care MP30 Specialist Monitor for the SCBU (special care baby unit) which continuously checks the baby’s vital signs.
The advantage of these monitors is that if a child is seriously ill it can make the difference between looking after them in Colchester and transferring them to a specialist hospital.it is obviously much better for the child and their family to stay nearer to home. The more of these monitors they have the more children can be treated at Colchester.

The Matron for Children's Services at the hospital, explained: “Sick children need close observation and monitoring. These ‘Vital Signs’ monitors assist nursing and medical staff to do this, with the least amount of distress caused to the child whilst continuously monitoring the child’s progress. These monitors support the care of the seriously ill child within the Children’s Unit at Colchester General Hospital and make a real difference to the child needing this level of high dependency care.
